Plant a Tree in Karachi on 26th, May, 18 and Save Yourself from a Big Disaster!

Karachi seems to be getting hotter with each passing year. And it’s not just our city, in fact, according to research Pakistan also makes it on the list as one of the countries to be most affected by climate change!

This is not a good sign!

While our country is still struggling for political stability, and a sustainable health and education sector, the problems lying ahead are much worse and complex.

Greenhouse effect, climate change, the rise in air pollution, soil pollution, water pollution etc. Increase use of pesticides and fertilizers, lack of proper garbage recycling units and without proper waste management. Karachi is on the verge of a big natural calamity. And if we all don’t act now, things will slip out of our hands.

Just to give you a visual look at what I’m talking about. Observe the picture below:-

As they say, a picture says a thousand words. Karachi’s current forestry condition is not good. And without beating around the bush, there is just one solution to this major problem. Plant Trees!

Heatwaves are killing more than 12,000 people in the world each year. Which is more than any other weather-related calamity.

And the only way we can counteract heatwaves is by planting more trees. All of us have learned in school in grade 1 that trees are natures very own filter system. And by chopping down trees, we are only choking the natural cleansing system which if not stopped right away, will lead us to an irreversible damage.

So why not join hands together with Urban Forest PK in this blessed month of Ramzan to plant a tree.

We are gathering at Street 13, Parklane Block 5 Clifton, at 5:30 pm sharp.

Each plant costs for Rs.950. Payment can be done on the spot. This price includes the maintenance of the plant for three years and then it becomes self-sustaining.

Please bear in mind that you have to reach at exact 5:30 pm as we don’t want to be late for Iftaar.

Planting a tree is not just a civil and moral duty on us but it is also considered as a charity in Islam. So why not make a beautiful charity in this blessed month of Ramzan by planting a tree in our city!

P.S (You can also share your stories/experiences of the event, and what you liked most and what are the other ways, we can bring about a greener revolution in our city. After all its everyone’s ideas and voices which will be the change!)

Best Female Dentist in Karachi; Dr. Wajeeha Rehman

Recently, I had been looking for the best dentist in Karachi. I was suffering from an acute toothache and knew that I was now a candidate for Root Canal. However, it was not just me, but other family members were also asking for references of good dentists.

So after visiting few dental clinics in Karachi, my heart finally settled for Dr.Wajeeha Rehman.

And without any doubt, I can say that she is one of the most competent and skilled dentists in Karachi.

I called her clinic and got scheduled an appointment on my requested date and time. This was such a convenience owing to the fact, that many dentists only prefer their scheduled time and not the patients.

Getting to her clinic was very easy since its located in one of most prime locations of Karachi.

Her clinic is definitely a state of the art clinic. It’s highly professional looking, neat and aesthetic. The shiny white interior is a proof of its regular maintenance and hygiene.

There is no manual filing system, it’s all computerized and highly efficient.

There were no delays in my appointment and I was catered right at the scheduled time. This was again such a relief, since many clinics and hospitals have very long wait hours, despite having an appointment.

So, once I got settled on the dental chair I was greeted by the most charming, professional and friendly dentist.

Dr. Wajeeha Rehman is young, competent, and highly skilled at her job.

She examined me very patiently and explained thoroughly about my tooth problem. Since all her equipment is the latest ones, there was no delay in producing the X-ray result. In fact, I could visually see my own dental X-ray right in front of the screen. This definitely makes one fully confident about their dentist and on the procedure, she is going to recommend.

My husband and I both have got our Root Canal Treatments done by her, and although these procedures take long and are expected to be somewhat painful, I have never witnessed a dentist who can pull it off so smoothly.

I could barely feel the injection on my gum, and the entire process was pain-free.

And it’s not just about us when it was my kid’s turn for their dental checkup, Dr. Wajeeha is the most child-friendly dentist I’ve ever met. And besides being child-friendly she is very skilled in making her little patients get comfortable.

Otherwise, usually, children are petrified of the dentist. But she is the kind where children are actually excited to visit.

My eight year old got a tooth extraction done by Dr.Wajeeha and that too with an anesthesia injection. She was so good at this, that he barely even twitched at the injection on his gum!

A Bit About Dr.Wajeeha Rehman

Dr. Wajeeha Rehman has been practicing dentistry over the last 10 years and has treated many patients.

Many of my relatives who visit from abroad, also got their treatments done by her and they have nothing but words of praise.

Recently, I got my teeth whitening done by her, and it is amazing. My teeth are sparkly white now, and the entire procedure went very well. I did not even feel much sensitivity for the next 24 hours.

So when it comes to the best teeth whitening in Karachi, just head to straight to Dr. Wajeeha.

Or if your teeth are really bad and they are lowering your self-confidence, you can also get that “Hollywood smile” by opting for Veneers, at her clinic. This is one of the latest cosmetic dental surgery, which is very much in trend and effective too.

She always treats her patients individually and is a great listener. She will always sit you down and make her best effort to make you feel comfortable and prepared for the procedure.

Although, there are many dental hospitals and dental clinics in Karachi. But not all of them are clean, hygienic and follow the standard procedure of sterilization.

When it comes to dental practice, following strict hygienic procedures is inevitable.

Unlike, a regular physicians visit a dental checkup will always involve the coming in contact with instruments. And if the dental instruments are not sterilized according to the standard procedure, the chances of acquiring infections are very high.

Thus it is highly critical to look out yourself and ask about the sterilization of instruments every time you visit the dentist.

Dr.Wajeeha’s instruments are 100% sterilized and she is very particular about disinfecting her clinic.

Unlike many dental clinics, which use tap water for rinsing and washing, Dr. Wajeeha only uses distilled water.

Teeth whitening, veneers, cosmetic dentistry Dr. Wajeeha Rehman does it all.

No matter how bad your teeth are, or if you are looking for cosmetic dental surgery, get in touch with Dr.Wajeeha and set up an appointment. Her team is very responsive and accommodating.

I always believe that your health should be your first investment, so if you are experiencing pain or heightened sensitivity, go to a dentist first and spend there, instead of considering the cost, because other things can wait but your health won’t. As the saying goes, “A stitch in time saves nine”

Top 10 Places to Visit in Karachi with Kids

Sumner vacations are just around the corner and so is Ramzan. With kids, one has to step out of their comfort and must find fun places to visit in Karachi.

For a huge megacity and the third populous city in the world, the attractions are not much. And if you are looking for fun places to visit in Karachi especially with kids, then the choices narrow down further. Usually, the most likable places by kids here are Sindbad, Bounce or just the mall.

However, new ventures open up every day. And sometimes the already existing ones are improvising. So this post is all about the fun places to visit in Karachi, with your little ones.

Places to Visit in Karachi with Kids

1.PAF Museum

Museum memories are some of the best and inspiring memories of childhood. I clearly remember my visits to the museum when I was a kid and I still enjoy going today.
PAF museum (Pakistan Air Force Museum ) is definitely a must visit if you have little kids. It’s nice and huge, well maintained, it has all the facilities. It is very green and one has to take a long walk with the kids before entering the museum. There are so many aircraft models on display, and there is so much information one can collect on Pakistans aviation. You can also plan a small picnic from home if you are not fond of buying food from outside. Evenings are best for a visit there, since its always breezy.

The reason I recommend PAF museum as a must place to visit in Karachi is because its a very interactive one.
Children can hop and hop off on some of the model aircraft and enjoy pressing buttons and moving the levers.

The Quaid’s Aircraft Vickers Viking is a marvel!
PAF museum is a families only and their timings are:-

Monday to Thursday 8:30 am to 10:00 pm
Friday 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm
Saturday and Sunday 8:30 am to 10:00 pm

Tickets Cost Rs.50

Children under 3, Free

2.Museum 101

A very new museum in town. My kids went there with their school on a field trip and they had an amazing experience. Since there are barely any science museums in Karachi. Museum 101 has done a great effort. Although the place is not huge, its a great initiative. As our children become more aware of space exploration and astronomical sciences, they will surely enjoy such a trip with mom and dad. If you are bored of taking your kids to the same arena again and again, then I highly recommend taking them here.  Museum 101 has some excellent displays of space rockets and aircraft they also show short space documentaries, which totally captivates the kids.

Timing is from 8 am to 10 pm

Monday to Thursday Rs.350 per person

Friday to Sunday Rs. 450 per person

Children under 3 and senior citizens are free

3.Jahangir Park

Located in the heart of Saddar this park was recently renovated. On an area of 6 acres, Jahangir Park is amongst the very well maintained and child-friendly parks of Karachi. The park has some dinosaurs models which are a lot of fun for kids.  They enjoy climbing on them and they get to experience a little of Jurassic Park. There is also a small library, which I believe is a great idea since we need to indulge kids in the habit of reading.

The timings are from 8 am to 10 pm.

4.Onderland

Located in Lucky One Mall, Onderland is the newest adventure arena in Karachi. I personally like it a lot because its new and exciting, the rides are bigger and thrilling. It has a lot of hands-on based activities like rock climbing, trampoline park, alien abduction ride. The toddlers’ soft play area is really nice and interactive. Its very clean and the staff is very friendly they are never rude. And its very cost effective. When visiting the first time you have to purchase a card worth Rs.1000 and then use this card for the rides. I have used one card in two trips and my kids had their fill of adventure.

Onderland is also Karachi’s first indoor theme park with a roller coaster.

5.Chunky Monkey

An amusement park located in one of Karachi’s prime location. As an adult, you can have mixed views about it, but kids surely love it. And if you are looking for someplace where your kids can have fun with khalas, phoppho or chachus then Chunky Monkey is the place to be. From Bumper cars, Pirates Ship, Fast Train, Drop Tower, Pendulum Ride Chunky Monkey has it all.

Their gaming arena is very nice too and my kids had a really good time.

6.Owls Nest

This is one of a kind cafe in Karachi, catering especially to parents with kids. As a parent of a toddler or older kids, one doesn’t really get comfortable in restaurants and mostly parents hand over tabs or phones to their kids to keep them busy. But in owls nest there are lots of hands-on activities and other games for children, children enjoy their time playing while adults can enjoy their food and talking.

7.Sindbad

Every Dolmen Mall in Karachi has a Sindbad. Sindbad is very much the oldest arena in Karachi yet children are never bored of it. As long as the rides are working, its clean, well maintained, Sindbad is one of the easiest and cost-effective places to visit in Karachi. Sindbads newest concept of redeeming points in the card is very exciting for kids. They just want to play more and more, to collect tickets and scroll them through the ticket counter. It’s a very thoughtful hook by them which makes it harder to pull out your kids from there 🙂

8.Sea View Beach

Sea View is one of the best places to visit, especially with children, since its a natural attraction and always open. Just a walk with your kids along the beach gives them a chance to ponder over nature and find a blissful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Honestly, I don’t even mind a camel ride once in a while and there are always loads of seashells which kids can collect and adorn.

Make your kids wear comfy clothes and flip-flops and carry a small bucket- and get ready to have lots of fun!

9.Bounce

If you want your kids to develop a big appetite before a buffet meal, take them to Bounce. Karachi’s first indoor trampoline park. There is also a birthday party room which is why Bounce is becoming a very popular choice by kids to host their parties. Although I find it a bit costly owing to the fact that its Rs.500 per child during the weekends, and the only fun that kids have is “Jump”. So I would recommend taking your kids to Bounce is better when there are at least 3-4 kids in the group. That way they can have more cooperative play and fun.

  • Monday – Thursday: 01 PM to 11 PM
  • Friday: 03PM to 11PM
  • Saturday – Sunday: 11 AM to 11 PM
  • Every Monday From 1 pm To 4 pm
    Exclusive For Ladies.
  • Monday To Thursday
jump pass Rs.400/- (Including Grip Socks)
  • Friday To Sunday
jump pass Rs.500/- (Including Grip Socks)

10.Port Grand

Although Port Grand is very far from the main city and if you’ve been there more than twice, as an adult it’s hard to find it exciting. But for kids, Port Grand is always exciting. Since there are always some new stalls, new activities for kids there is always a small circus kind of performance also displayed at Port Grand, like the fire dancers, cyclist, and a puppet show. And no matter how many times kids watch the same magic show, they are always fascinated by the tricks. So usually there is always a magic show performed at Port Grand.

Port Grand is not only about activities for kids but its main attraction is the food. There are many food ventures promising a unique taste and ambiance. But the USP of Port Grand is its overall location and design. Next, to the port, one can witness the big cargo ships, lightning the sea, cool breeze always rustling through your face and  a long walk with your little ones while enjoying an ice cream. So its the overall environment of Port Grand which makes it special.

6 Tips to Book a Guest House in Karachi

Over the past few years, the trend of staying in hotels, motels, guest houses has rapidly increased in big cities like Karachi. Although earlier people, who did not have family or close acquaintances would opt for guest houses now even people who have families here are opting to stay in hotels or guest houses.

Whatever it is, when you are on the hunt of a guest house in Karachi then there are certain things you must look out for.

Why Tourists Prefer a Guest House Over a Hotel

  • More Affordable
Guest Houses definitely weigh less on your pocket. Whereas hotels charge you way too much, while many have inclusive breakfast packages but still it rounds up to cost much more.Whereas many guest houses also have kitchens where you can cook to your own desire. Thus the food expense is in your own hands and you only pay for what you really eat.
  • Home Away From Home
Honestly, now I am just a big fan of guest houses because they are always so cozy and comforting and especially with little kids one needs the extra space to move around. Also, one doesn’t feel trapped in a room, there more freedom.
  • Have the entire Space to Yourself
Since guest houses are not as grand as hotels, and there are relatively fewer people accommodated there, one usually gets to know everyone. And one can easily move around the lobby and lounges. There a fewer people in the pool and you definitely feel as if you own the place.

Guest Houses in Karachi

After the rise of Air BnB and the increases of people visiting Karachi, the demand of guest houses in Karachi has increased. But let’s consider some of the key points before opting for a guest house in Karachi

Tips to Book a Guest House in Karachi

  1. Location
Karachi is a huge city, which has certain pockets of areas which are either not very safe or not very friendly. I am not going to name them since many of us already know. So a wiser decision to select a guest house in Karachi is to make sure of its location. The guest house must be in the busy areas of the city and not cordoned off away from the main centers. Also, there are some guest houses which have been in business for quite a while, and they have neighboring guest houses as well, so it’s better to opt for them. Even if you need to travel to some far off distances, choose a reputable guest house in a decent location.
  2. Reviews
This is totally where you must and should rely on your social network Reference, reviews, and recommendations, which will come way too handy.Honestly, nowadays the only trusted source are the genuine people of your community, who will tell you the most honest details, like I did not appreciate the window of the guest house facing right across the neighboring house, they could directly peep into our rooms.” Now, this is something which only a commoner who has spent few days in that particular guest house will tell you.
  3. Security
Before booking a guest house, always always ask about the security details, like are there functioning security cameras installed? if yes then how many? Is there a security guard at the entrance? Do they have a locker etc.
  4. High-Speed Internet
Our source of survival when we are away from home. Everything nowadays is the internet, we rely on it more than ever. So a good guest house will definitely have a high-speed internet.
  5. Family friendly
Is the guest house entertaining towards families with children? And even if you are not planning to stay with children a family friendly guest house, usually has decent people at its managerial positions. They are more accommodating. Also, a family-friendly guest house will have the necessary facilities in its vicinity.
  6. Cost
Lastly, but not the least, cost. Depending on the kind of stay, you can manage your budget. A shorter stay, intended only for spending the night, should not cost much. But if you are staying with family, then you must consider all the above points. Depending on your planned budget, you can always figure out a suitable guest house in Karachi.

How to Start a Small Business in Karachi

How to start a small business in Karachi?
Hey, there budding solopreneurs, entrepreneurs, stuck in a boring routine, confused but willing to take a risk, the willingness to try something new, and of course the big dreamers of the big bucks, I bet that almost every one of you living in this city has at least once in their life asked this question to themselves?
Haven’t you??
Ever since the human civilization began, people have been trading. Or in other words, people have been doing business. So maybe we just can’t help it, the business mind is a part of our human evolution 🙂
But every time you try to research about how to start a small business in Karachi, the discussions are very vague, and there are so many thousands of questions that are unanswered.

Small Business in Karachi

First, let’s make clear, of the difference between small business and big business. Is there really a difference? According to many big business tycoons, every successful small business becomes a big business. And we have many seen many such examples in Karachi itself. A french fries stall running successfully is converted to a small restaurant. A home based designer, becomes a brand, a small honey selling company, starts selling honey on the aisles alongside big brands like Langanese Honey, and so on and so forth.
So their small businesses were a success!

How to start a small business in Karachi

First, let’s talk about the basic types of  Small Businesses popular in Pakistan
1. Retail business
2. Service business
So when I do my research to find the facts and figures for the business stats in Karachi I was disappointed to find none! Whereas the Punjab Government has provided a detailed published PDF file of its retail business report.
This is such a bummer for anyone, be it a young girl, boy, who has very little investments and wishes to start his or her own small business in Karachi. And since nowadays people always research on the internet for information before actually taking decisions, and if they aren’t able to find exact results, this definitely gives you cold feet, and your decisions might waver.
However, I got the facts for Pakistan, and its retail business report.
According to statistics from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics for the years 2011-12, the retail sector is worth $4.2 Billion, which represents around 18% of GDP.
And since Karachi contributes 20% to the total of GDP, and according to World Bank Karachi is one of the most business-friendly city of Pakistan, Karachi surely holds a big position in Pakistan’s economy.
Sounds too good to be true for many but yes it is I mean look at it actually, ever since we were growing up and becoming aware of this megacity, and our country’s economy, Karachi was always cited.
And there is absolutely no doubt about Karachi being the financial hub, of our country. Let’s not get into stats, but yes Karachi is the largest city and the most populous city of Pakistan and the third most populous city in the world. I don’t know if the population stats is something to be proud of but yes it is and with so many humans inhabiting this city, there is always always a huge demand and supply need.
People move to this city to try their luck, many win many fail, many keep trying.
But let me just give you one piece of advice if you are considering, how to start a small business in Karachi or any other part of the world; you can never sell short on honesty!
Yes, something very humanistic and philosophical but guess what business is more of a personal philosophy than one’s own personal possessions.
So if you have an honest(authentic) product, service, an idea you will not fail on that, that’s for sure. But whether your business will be a big hit always depends on one thing and that is “Do you know how to sell?”
A very basic question but this is what encompasses all the advertising, marketing, social media presence, PR etc. They are only meant to serve only one purpose and that is to sell.
And when you sell, a good product, and are consistent then you have a win-win situation.
But these really smooth perfect lines are easier said than done because the entire process of choosing the kind of business to marketing it, can be a tough grind. And in this very lengthy, painstaking process people often lose hope or back out.
You see its especially not easy for those who come from a non-business background. And especially if everyone in your family has always been a 9-5 kind of person.
Breaking a stereotype within such a family could be almost like moving a hill. People will not be supportive, or they might be confused, they will not be certain and the downers will definitely hope for you to fall flat on your face!

Limitations of starting a small business in Karachi

So considering the above family constraints, let’s consider the odds before answering how to start a small business in Karachi:
  • You can never be sure of anything sounds brutal but true, in a moment the streets will close down, there can be a sudden political change in the city and other kinds of political crisis
  • Electricity- The biggest crunch! One year KE will be kind on us, as the load-shedding is only for 1 hour and the other year it could be 3- 4 times for 2 hours without warning
  • Traffic is getting worse, I mean how is the growing population going to move around? In the last year alone more than 200,000 were sold in Pakistan, out of which Karachi alone holds a big number.
  • Resources, water, gas, electricity; the city faces a crisis of resources. And no area is exempt from it.
  • Corruption, one can’t turn a blind eye to it, but it still very much exists. It’s not always easy to make the ride, corrupt people won’t let anyone get away without having their share.
  • Many businesses are hijacked by bigger corporations, so you need to figure out your niche.

These points are surely spine-chilling but a smart, witty and well-planned mind can definitely conquer all odds and make it happen. So don’t lose hope!

Small Businesses (services) in Karachi

Any kind of service that you tend to offer is counted as a service business.

Beauty parlor, tutoring, tailor, home-based baker, catering services etc all such business are pretty booming too.

So if you have got a talent, such as teaching, designing, coaching, then you really can start with zero investment! All you have to do is collect clients and start off. But make sure that you are consistent in your work and have excellent interpersonal skills because you are your own brand. Your talent is actually what you are selling. In order to succeed you better be good at it.

Your Current Financial and Family Standing

If you already have a job, and are married, have kids, be very vigilant about your plans, because a new business will require most of your time and energy, you need to plan ahead for the consequences that your family might face. ( I would suggest, try to come up with a plan in which you can keep your job as well as focus on your business) sounds hard but if executed properly you can do it!

Your location (suppose you plan to open up a retail shop )  then you know the saying, location, location, location.

So if you are living in Gulistan-e -Johar and want to open the shop in Clifton consider all odds possible, because time and distance will cost you.

Now comes the actual question “how to start a small business in Karachi”?

Starting from scratch really means everything from planning to execution and staying in the loop.

But what will work and what won’t,  Do I have what it takes, or am I being crazy? How do I convince my family? Will I be good at it? These are all the first basic questions that arise before we want to start something new?

Popular small businesses in Karachi

Home based bakery

Food stalls

Auto spare parts

Dairy business

Online ladies garments

Restaurants

Freelance business

Tutoring services

Event coordinator

Tailoring services

But how to select your product/ business type? Is the big question and especially if you don’t have any previous experience.

There are usually theories;-

Public demand

Your interest

One can’t deny the importance of public or market research but what if you step into a field which is only high in demand of the market but you have very little or zero interest in it?

Here is the place where niches and sub-niches come in to play.

How to start a small business in Karachi (selecting your product)

Find any field, anything that you are passionate about, and go for it.

But what if you are not passionate about anything that could be turned into a business?

Well then the process can be broken down into following steps

likeness <——interest<——Hobby<——passion

So from the above just pick one and go for it.

Let’s consider an example, you enjoy cooking. You like food, you like watching recipes and are good at cooking.

Considering food as your niche, how will you start a small business in Karachi, with low investment?

Since your investments are limited you cannot set up a restaurant right away, but you can always cook for customers.

So just with the word of mouth or through social media, spread the word that you can cook for 30 or 50 people.

Through proper social media marketing and your smart personality, and if you really cook well then people will like you and give reviews about you.

But always consider your competitor. Are there other people also doing the same thing? Well then try to improvise, if they are cooking desi you cook Chinese, or pasta anything that’s different but in demand.

But always make sure to put forward your limitations for a food business, as you will need 24 hours full supply of gas, fresh supply of fruits and veggies, utensils, packing boxes and other necessities.

And always always look professional and neat!

(This post is a basic outline answer to the question how to start a small business in Karachi, but there is so much more to share.  I will be more than happy to answer your questions, you can always post them in the comment box below or post them on our facebook page.)

7 Things You Need to Know about Online Grocery Shopping in Karachi

“Let’s order online” the new tagline by many people nowadays.

Be it food, clothes, accessories, books, and even grocery. Admit it, we are slowly converting into an onlineoholic generation. We love youtube, we love Netflix, we are constantly on Whatsapp and everyone’s favorite activity scrolling down on their FB, not even actually reading or seeing just skimming the screen or maybe not even doing that. Its just becoming an addiction!

But,  Hey guess what! not everyone can live their 24 hours online, they have to cook, clean, help their kids with HW and manage a household. And for running a household, we need GROCERY!

Ohhh the dreaded and boring grocery shopping, the same items rice, oil, lentils meat etc bought again, again. But to survive we have to do it come what may. So if like me and many others you are not very fond of going to the grocery store I’m sure you must have considered about online grocery shopping.

Online Grocery Shopping

Online grocery shopping is slowly becoming one of the fastest growing businesses in Pakistan. People will not always buy clothes or makeup or electronic items but they will always do grocery. And what better than selecting the items at your fingertips and getting it delivered right to your door.

But many times the process is not entirely smooth and then you cringe over the fact that it would have been better to take the trip to the grocery store and collecting the items at once.

A few months back I got into a muddle with my online grocery shopping. We ordered around 12 items from a popular online grocery store but were very disappointed with the service. The first time we ordered, the delivery was quick, the guy brought his charging machine with him, we got a bonus dishwashing liquid. All the items were right, there was no problem at all. Since the first impression went very well, we subconsciously ordered our grocery from the same store. And because the first time, we tested with fewer items, this time our list was bigger, since we trusted the service. But unfortunately, like many new businesses in Karachi, this one too did not stand up to its promise.

The delivery was 5 days late, the guy brought a handwritten docket which was so unprofessional, he did not bring the charging machine, and even the items were not the ones we ordered. Instead of Lux, there was Capri, instead of Canbebe diapers there was ABC and even some other items were notoriously switched with other brands.

And since usually, we do payments by card, the delivery guy asked for cash, this was such a screw-up, that we had to talk to his manager, tell about the situation, then he came again the next day for the payment. There were so many hiccups, that we never did online grocery shopping.

But nothing is forever, as new businesses keep coming up trying to prove themselves and we Karachiites as the kind, forgiving, forgetful and trusting citizens, give the benefit of the doubt and try again:)

So below I have shared important things you need to know about online grocery shopping

7 Things You Need to Know About Online Grocery Shopping

1. Always Check out Reviews

Don’t just blindly land on any grocery store that you found in Facebook, and don’t fall into the trap of cheesy sales words, that no matter where you are in Karachi delivery is free, very convenient payment methods etc. Don’t trust unless you get an acquaintances verdict.

2.Be Very Vigilant About Online Payments

Avoid unfamiliar websites for payments, your credit cards carry highly important and critical information. Since most of the payment method in Pakistan is done by cash, especially with online shopping where people can’t trust the entire process of online shopping until they physically see their purchased item.

But if you find keeping cash everytime available, as a bit, of an inconvenience then you can use reputable payment apps like Keenu, EasyPay etc.

3.Always Order Prior The Day You Need the Items

Let’s say you are planning a lunch on Saturday, then it’s best that you start your online grocery shopping on Wednesday because in Karachi you never know what will happen the next moment. So always prepare a few days in advance.

4. Read About the Return Policy

Some online grocery shopping stores have pretty flexible return policies, but it can happen that once you want to exchange an item, the time for the exchange can be way too long, which is a real disappointment.

This is where your social media expertise comes in handy. Read reviews about the return policy.

Also, some stores charge for delivery for items which are more than 1 kg, which will cost you more if you order big packages.

5. Don’t Fall into the Package Trap

Honestly, just buy what you want! The key to smart grocery shopping is just picking the stuff that’s on your list and not get carried away with this new promotion. Its very rare that you save big bucks by buying packages, and even if you do then it’s very meager.

On the other hand availing discounts is a good option.

6.Is Delivery Free?

Usually, many online grocery stores offer free delivery to certain areas, but they may not always clearly state it. If the delivery charges are above average than just go out to the grocery yourself. A little bit of physical effort won’t do much harm.

7. For Fresh Items Always Check Expiry

Nowadays fresh meat delivery is also a very new and high demand thing. Nobody really enjoys standing in front of the smelly meat stand, and not all areas have upscale, neat glass-enclosed meat shops. So getting fresh meat delivered at home can be such a lifesaver.

So whenever you are ordering fresh meat especially then do check the expiry date bar code. In Hyperstar, they always label the product with the expiry date, which is a very consumer helpful thing to do.

Online grocery shopping definitely has its perks, but is it a complete hit in Pakistan and are Karachiites totally into it, it’s hard to say.

Do share your online grocery shopping experiences, and which store do you find to be the most reliable.

10 Red Flags to Look Out For a Day Care Center in Karachi

Isn’t it strange that over the last few years or even months I could say, there has been a rise in new day care centers opening in Karachi.

Let alone in Defence and Clifton which already has a large number of day care centers, PECHS, Gulshan are also booming with this business.

I am not denying the need for day care centers, of course working parents need them, and mostly working mothers need them.

The Rising Need of Day Cares

With the recent changes in our society, like the increasing shift towards nuclear family, inflation, energy crisis, far distances from one’s family, and the dire need of the mothers to start their career ASAP, day care centers in the vicinity of a neighborhood provide a huge relief.

But unfortunately, just like private schools and private colleges, day care centers are also setting foot in this “education business.” Which is trading for services, like education or child care.

But what I see happening now especially with day care centers is that the service feature is declining and only the business element  is left.

Usually, a day care center caters children aged 2 months to around 5 years of age, but this also depends on different countries and cities that have varying age requirements.

However, in Karachi, I see children aged 1 year and up mostly admitted in day care centers.

But there is something very important to consider before opting a day care center in Karachi and that is, “Are they qualified for the service?”

Recently, my boys and I attended a birthday party at a so-called play center cum activity center cum day care, in Clifton.

This day care was made in a 2 story apartment, there was no outdoor play area, it looked very crammed.

Another thing, there were many tiled stairs leading to the upper section. These stairs were very slippery.

Although the interior looked very colorful and attractive, the actual soul of the building was missing, which was meant to give space to infants and toddlers, for interactive play.

I did not appreciate the caretaking staff, as well, who looked more like ramp models rather than affectionate and mature women who have an experience of childcare. They were coated with makeup and had long painted nails! Who in the world keeps long nails when working with little ones unless they are your own.

But the biggest bummer of all was that they did not have a proper functioning back up generator! And all the kids at the party were drenched in their sweat.

And honestly there was nothing really exciting, because kids are not attracted to colorful walls, or wall art, their number one priority is interactivity. Becuase almost every child has his/her own avalanche of toys, but the only thing missing is the attention and time of an adult, which they crave most. Now this attention can be of the parent or the caregiver.

Based on my observations I have compiled a list of critical features you must consider before admitting your child in a day care

(Also please bear in mind that these points are based on the GUIDELINES AND STANDARDS FOR DAY CARE CENTRES WOMEN DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT GOVERNMENT OF THE PUNJAB) couldn’t find one for Sindh 🙁

10 Red Flags to Look Out For a Day Care Center in Karachi

  1. It Is NOT Roomy Enough

I know most of us are unaware of the exact standard for space in a room for a group of children. Well, its there and its pretty much calculated. Take a look:-

  2. The stairs are NOT Nonskid

Pay close attention, serious injuries can occur to infants and toddlers because of stairs.

  3. Exceeding Number of Children in One Group

Inquire and always check yourself the number of children in each group

  4. The child and Staff ratio is NOT according to standards

There is actually a calculated staff and child ratio

  5. The absence of Fire Alarms and Fire Extinguisher

Most of them have it, but still many don’t, check for yourself

  6. The Staff is NOT First Aid Trained

This one is sooo important many lives are saved due to prompt first aid services

  7. The Staff is NOT Trained for Fire Safety

Accidents can happen anywhere and anytime. Better be prepared than sorry

  8. The Staff is NOT Medically Examined

As a Microbiology student, I know that many people are carriers of diseases( they carry the disease within  without the visible symptoms) so a thorough medical examination is quite promising.

  9. The Staff is below 18 years of Age

So if you see a really young girl or young boy doing the job, just ask their age

  10. The Manager is NOT Qualified

Did you know its compulsory for the manager to have the proper qualifications to run a day care center?

Just like me, you will also be better informed by reading these guidelines. I also know that there are standard rules and guidelines for every sector in our country, which are not always followed, however, the more and more the public is informed and takes tiny steps in questioning the authority, services, and sectors can be improved.

Sushi Indulgence at Miyako, Pan Asian Bistro

I love sushi!

I bet there are many people out there, who don’t like sushi, or cant stand it or there are people who don’t even know what it is. I’m not judging anyone here, but I can say it is one of those finest foods in the world, that requires an adaptation to its taste.

Once your palate, is infected by its seductive taste, you can’t help craving for more!

I had the best sushi of my life in Sacramento, California in a restaurant named FATS. The California Roll and Tuna Sushi was just an explosion of flavors in the mouth.

Miyako

Ever since that experience I have been craving for sushi here in Karachi. And my quest for sushi hunger led me to Miyako.

Miyako is a fine dine classy restaurant located in main Khayaban-e-Shahbaz phase 6 DHA. Reaching there is not an issue since it’s on the same line with Mocca and Hardees.

Miyakos entrance looks very neat and modern. The interior space is not very huge, but it’s nice and elegant.

I always appreciate the clean cuts of the table and seating arrangements, which gives the impression that food is our priority.

Expensive Restaurants Vs Taste

You see many fancy restaurants in Karachi, aim to deliver more of an experience rather than indulgence in the flavor.

I have been to some really “high end” restaurants but their food was so below average. And what hurt, even more, is the overly priced menu.

The staff was pretty efficient and friendly, once you order the food is delivered in no time.

Miyako Delivers Taste and Experience

Now coming to the actual taste. Tuna sushi topped it all. The tuna was fresh, it was tasty, perfectly sliced. Everything was delectable. The wasabi had an overall good concentrated texture and flavor. However, it wasnt very strong.

My second favorite was the crab, although the quantity of crab meat in each sushi was less, the taste was really good. Prawn and red snapper were good too. Salmon had an average taste though.

So if you are a big sushi fan, I would recommend ordering the local harvest fish like tuna, prawn and red snapper.

But if you want to enjoy some really good tuna, you can call Miyako as they also deliver sushi in Karachi.

However, its not just the sushi that Miyako should be considered, but you must also try the Pan Asian variety.

They have many hits like the firecracker chicken, and chicken teriyaki. Depending on your spice level, you have options to choose ranging from moderate to spicy to very spicy.

When it comes to value for money, it’s reasonable and comparable to other Pan Asian Restaurants.

Miyako is a great place to enjoy great food and ambiance with family and friends.

Lucky One Mall; Another Spectacular Addition in Karachi

Karachi is a HUGE city! And when I stress on the word huge, I mean to emphasize on the point that every day many new businesses are launching, new restaurants open up, new schools come into action, new shops are launched. But due to great distances, people often living in one part of the city, miss out on the good stuff on the other side.

However, some ventures are just too good to be missed, and I would recommend making that extra effort to actually go and visit it. Lucky One Mall is definitely one of them. It’s very new, just around a year since its launch and people can’t help raving about it.

Of course, the launch was pretty grand with celebrities and musical shows etc, and the following days were a bombardment of people flocking in. I also heard that on the first day of opening, people were lined up for hours!

I am not judging people here, usually many Karachiites want to see its city progress and reach new heights, and its very hard to wait to explore something new.

However, I waited for a few weeks due to time availability. I went there with my kids and parents.

Reaching There

If you are going from Nazimabad or Sakhi Hassan take the overhead bridge (Nagan Bridge) and you will reach there in just 15 minutes without getting stuck in traffic but if you take the Ayesha Manzil route from the UBL complex you will get caught in traffic.  Since all these areas are also connected to distant areas such as Tariq road, Clifton, PECHS you may choose whatever route suits you.

I clearly remember that before Lucky One Mall was constructed this site was allocated for the construction of an apartment building complex, but somehow the apartment building was converted into a mega-mall.

Now the location of Lucky One mall is pretty central, because its connected to Gulshan, Gulistane Johar, Hasan Square and Ayesha Manzil.

Amazing Interior

When you enter the mall, you will be quite impressed by the huge entrance and the parking facilities.

I must admit the first impression that you get when you look at the mall, is that it looks nice but it won’t be that huge. False.

The entrance view doesn’t give the exact insight of the mall, as soon as you would enter the mall you are guaranteed to be awe-stricken because this mall is grand and glittering.

With all the national and many international brands, Lucky One Mall is pretty much state of the art. Some people compare it with malls in Dubai, others believe it’s a competitor to Dolmen City Mall. I say its another wonderful shopping mall in Karachi which provides the experience and facilities to its best.

You Will Find Everything

Also when it comes to our national brands such as Sapphire, Khaadi, Ethnic their stores in Lucky One Mall is bigger as compared to other malls, also the interior designing is extremely beautiful. If you’ve been to big stores in New York City, you can make a connection of the way the products are displayed in exquisite glass boxes, which adds to the brand value.

Also Sapphire has Sapphire Men collection there which I did not see in any other mall. Another personal favorite it Ethnic, they had a huge collection of clothes. Many designs which I did not see in Dolmen City mall I was able to get them easily there.

Ask for any brand and you are sure to find it there. The only problem that I had there was in spotting the elevators, which are not in the front but you have to walk a distance to reach to them. Since I’m with little kids, I’m hesitant in using escalators.

Onderland

But the star of Lucky One Mall is its kids’ arena, Onederland. Ok, I must admit, my kids, enjoy there more as compared to Sindbad. Reasons:-

  • Its new and exciting
  • The rides are bigger and thrilling
  • It has a lot of hands-on based activities like rock climbing, trampoline park, alien abduction it’s a smaller version of the plane ride
  • The interior is very vibrant and colorful
  • The toddlers’ soft play area is really nice with many hands-on activities.
  • Its very clean and the staff is very friendly they are never rude.
  • And its very cost effective. When visiting the first time you have to purchase a card worth Rs.1000 and then use this card for the rides. I have used one card in two trips and my kids had their fill of adventure.

Onderland is also Karachi’s first indoor theme park with a roller coaster.

But the best part about Onderland is their party room. It is new, it’s spacious and it’s very clean.

Earlier there was a party room in Sindbad Dolmen City Mall too, which I believe was a very good option for celebrating kids birthdays, but ever since that closed down, people celebrate birthdays in the open food court, which does not provide privacy.

So the only and really attractive birthday party room that I see available in Karachi is the party room in Onderland.

As you stroll through the levels of Lucky One mall you will also discover many new brands, which are worth a look.

Food Court

But when it comes to the food court I don’t find it equal to the overall magnitude of Lucky One Mall. It looks smaller and definitely needs more food ventures. However, you will find a lot of U.K based food brands like Dixie Chicken and London Fries. I have tried Dixie Chicken the taste is average, though the price is same as KFC.

My suggestion would be if planning to eat from there, first take a good look at everything that’s around, then decide and preferably go with the brands you already know.

Lastly but not the least, do check out the Hyperstar there. It’s very neat and huge. I like their arrangement and it resembles the Carrefour setting in Paris.

Lucky One Mall, is a must visit for every Karachiite as there is lots to explore and having fun!
